Cannabinoid Drug Interactions: Awareness & Patient Safety
Speakers:
Paul Kocis, RPh, PharmD, MPH, Clinical Pharmacist, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Anticoagulation Clinic
Join Paul Kocis, RPh, PharmD, MPH, clinical pharmacist at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Anticoagulation Clinic, for an informative review of cannabinoid drug interactions.
Survey data show that communication between adult patients and healthcare providers about cannabinoid (CBD) use is often limited, which may increase the risk of drug–drug interactions with prescribed medications. In addition, nonprescription cannabinoids and medical marijuana (cannabis) currently lack Food and Drug Administration–approved prescribing information and standardized resources for evaluating potential interactions with other medication.
Webinar participants will
• Learn to assess patient awareness of cannabinoid use, reporting practices, and perceptions regarding safety
• Describe drug–drug interactions with emphasis on how cannabinoids may affect the metabolism of concomitantly prescribed medications
• Explain how the CANNabinoid Drug Interaction Review (CANN-DIR) clinical decision support tool can be incorporated into the medication reconciliation process
• Demonstrate how CANN-DIR drug–drug interaction results can be generated in multiple languages and shared with healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers
1.0 continuing education hours will be awarded for completion of this course. Continuing education credits apply to Pennsylvania registered nurses only.
