They will describe SCA considerations for each component of traditional event analysis, how they established SCA within their organizations, and how you can deploy SCA in your facility. Additionally, participants will learn how to mitigate “third victim syndrome” for safety professionals analyzing only errors and how to involve patients and families in patient safety and quality process reviews.

WebinarUnderstanding Enhanced Barrier Precautions Date/Time: April 3, 2024 - 1 to 2 p.m. Speakers: JoAnn Adkins, BSN, RN, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC, Infection Prevention Advisor, Patient Safety Authority Description: Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) are an evidence-based best practice designed to reduce the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) by expanding the use of gloves and gowns during high-contact resident care activities, especially for those at increased risk of acquiring or spreading an MDRO. EBP were released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2019 and are now regulated.
This webinar will discuss the targeted, high-risk pathogens which require EBP, the components of EBP, and when to institute them.
Recommendations now include use of EBP for residents with chronic wounds or indwelling medical devices during high-contact resident care activities, regardless of their MDRO status.
The new guidance related to EBP is being incorporated into F880 Infection Prevention and Control.
Please add EBP into your practice if your facility is not currently using them. Patent Safety Authority infection prevention advisors (IPA) are available to answer any questions about EBP that you may have. Access the IPA coverage map and contact information here.

Charles Kelly, JD, partner, and Samantha Gross, JD, MPH, associate, at Saul Ewing LLP, will walk you through two important pieces of legislation that protect healthcare workers: the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005, which ensures federal privilege and confidentiality of information about providers and patients involved in a safety event (“Patient Safety Work Product”), and Section 311 of the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error Act (MCARE), which exempts investigative materials and documents from discovery or admission as evidence in civil or administrative actions or proceedings.

WebinarLong-Term Care Emergency Preparedness Educational Series - The Importance of Exercise Date/Time: November 10, 2022 - 12:30 to 1 p.m. Speakers: JoAnn Adkins, BSN, RN, senior infection preventionist at the Patient Safety Authority Description: The Patient Safety Authority (PSA) is starting a 12-month Long-Term Care Emergency Preparedness educational series as identified by respondents of the 2020 PA LTCF annual survey requesting assistance with emergency preparedness. Pennsylvania is vulnerable to multiple threats and hazards. These include severe weather, floods, fires, tornados, hazardous materials spills, active shooter, terrorism, and infectious disease outbreak. While each of these threats is a problem in and of themselves, they may cause disruption to power, telephone, potable water and critical supplies and services such as food, staffing, medical supplies, and gasoline. Preparing for such disasters is critical for ensuring the safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors of long-term care facilities. The goal of this series is to provide facilities with education and resources to assist in developing and enhancing their emergency preparedness plan to protect the lives and property of residents, staff, and visitors. Facilities will be asked to complete a survey at the beginning of the series to ascertain level of preparedness, issues they are experiencing and opportunities for improvement. Education in the form of webinars and tools will be provided along with 1:1 support as requested by the participants. Facilities will be asked to complete an evaluation of the education and resurvey of facility level of preparedness at the end of the series. This discussion will include a brief overview of surgeries, and what these surgeries require from both patients and the institutions who provide care. We will then reflect on how transcare actually contributes to – and improves, care quality for all (i.e. cis-gender) adult and pediatric patients at an institution. Lastly, we will spend time focusing on how culturally sensitive care is, in fact, a safety issue for trans patients that come to our institutions, and, how not delivering culturally competent care should be a concern for institutions. At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to: Summarize the key components of a comprehensive interdisciplinary transgender surgery and health program Describe common pre and post-operative challenges that institutions face providing genital gender affirming surgery, and how to meet these challenges Review examples of how institutional expertise related to transgender surgery and care can translate to improved care for non-transgender patients Describe how transgender healthcare quality is a safety issue for both patients and institutions This webinar is sponsored by Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) and CHPSO. WebinarScaling the Mountain: Peaks and Pitfalls of Perioperative Pain Management Date/Time: December 17, 2020 - 12 to 1 p.m. Speakers: Dr. Tanya Uritsky, clinical pharmacy specialist in pain stewardship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Description:
Join Dr. Tanya Uritsky, clinical pharmacy specialist in pain
stewardship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she will
identify risk factors for opioid-induced respiratory depression in hospitalized
surgical patients, define opioid tolerance, recognize other CNS depressants
that can potentiate opioid-induced sedation and respiratory depression, and
recommend an appropriate opioid starting dose for an opioid naïve perioperative
patient.
Opioid stewardship is the appropriate use of opioids and is
an important part of patient safety. The highest risk for the development of
opioid-induced respiratory depression is during the first 24 hours
post-operatively. Knowing the best practices for pain management in the
perioperative period, including how to identify a patient at increased risk for
opioid-related adverse events, can help to improve patient safety. This session
will provide insights into patient-related risk factors and considerations for
pain management in the perioperative period.

The incidence of iGAS infection is higher among long-term care residents than among community members of the same age, and residents who develop iGAS infections have significant morbidity and mortality risk due to advanced age, close living conditions, and comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease). Outbreaks of iGAS in LTC facilities in the United States and Canada have mortality rates of 8% to 40%. In light of the frequency with which these events occur and the spectrum of places these events occur in, OR and hospital personnel need to look at preventive strategies and harm mitigation efforts. Is the risk of retention really less than the risk of retrieval? If indeed retention does occur then understanding disclosure and reporting responsibilities are necessary.

Gibbs, M.D., Director, NoThing Left Behind® Description: Couldn’t figure out the how and why of that retained sponge case? What’s the definition of when it’s retained “after surgery”? The vagina is the second most common site for a retained sponge, usually occurring after a normal birth -- how can medical staff engage and perform a methodical wound exam in every case? Learn the distinctions among the three different situations of therapeutic packing, orifice packing, and wound packing; and gain clarity on safe preventive practices.
