Data Scientist and Research

Shawn Kepner is the data scientist for the Patient Safety Authority (PSA). In his role, Kepner is responsible for providing actionable insights using data science techniques and works with staff to focus resources and research in areas that have the greatest benefit to patient safety. As a statistician, he also serves as a resource to assess the quality and validity of statistical methodologies for research and publications.   

Prior to joining the PSA, Kepner was a contractor with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, where he served as the data manager for a new community health initiative. Prior to that, he held several positions from Decision Support Consultant to Manager of Informatics for Novitas Solutions, the largest Medicare Administrative Contractor in the United States. He has held other analytic and leadership positions, such as bureau director for Program Support with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and program manager with Xerox Corporation. Kepner has been an adjunct instructor in mathematics at Harrisburg Area Community College as well as a presenter of the use of statistics to the Department of Public Welfare's Leadership Development Institute.

Kepner received a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Millersville University and a Master of Science in applied statistics from Villanova University.
