The staff of Penn Highlands Elk Surgery Center (PHESC) — Kelly Romano, MPH Einstein Medical Center Montgomery
Einstein Medical Center Montgomery
As director of Infection Control and Patient Safety at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery, Kelly has had a powerful impact on the organization. When she assumed the additional responsibilities of patient safety officer five years ago, she embraced the role and has taken the Patient Safety program to new heights. She began by implementing a daily patient safety leadership call that provides the management team with important safety updates. She has worked collaboratively with the clinical staff to significantly reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). She implemented educational isolation rounds to include the patient, family, and staff to help reduce the number of patients with multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO) and implemented a Good Catch program to recognize staff who actively prevent harm from reaching our patients. Kelly’s ability to leverage her skills in both her important roles has immensely helped the organization successfully deal with the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a two-time survivor of breast cancer, Kelly also is an active participant in the community, raising funds, speaking, and educating about the importance of breast cancer treatment and helping other young survivors deal with their diagnosis.
